Welsh Assembly Government

The Welsh Assembly Government has made a £30 million investment in the FibreSpeed project in North Wales. This investment is the first phase of a long term Assembly Government programme to transform high bandwidth availability and pricing across Wales and it is the first Government supported network of its kind in the UK. The provision of a high speed network will bring prices of high bandwidth internet services within a wide area of North Wales down to a par with those charged in London & South East England.
It is estimated that the presence of the North Wales network alone will add up to £29 million a year to the Welsh economy through increasing productivity of existing customers and attracting inward investment. It will also encourage innovation through research, development and commercialisation of new products and services.
In the longer term the Assembly Government believe that FibreSpeed will have a transformational impact on Wales which is fully aligned with the Assembly Government’s One Wales agenda.
The Welsh Assembly Government is committed to working with our strategic partner, FibreSpeed Limited to fully exploit the economic benefits FibreSpeed will deliver for our economy in Wales.
Objective 1 European Funding
Part of the funding for this project (around £5 million) will be received from ERDF European Structural Funds, managed by the Wales European Funding Office. These funds provide aid for projects that help bridge the social and economic disparities between regions. Central to this aim is the sustainable development of economic activities, employment, the protection and improvement of the environment and promotion of equal opportunities for all sectors. The FibreSpeed project is perfectly aligned to these core aims, particularly in areas of West Wales.
