PRESS RELEASE

New wireless technology extends FibreSpeed network in North Wales

MORE businesses can now connect to the high-speed digital communications network FibreSpeed, even if they are some distance from the fibre, thanks to new technology installed by a specialist IT company.

FibreSpeed service provider Carrier Wales has launched a WiMAX service covering Deeside, Sandycroft, Broughton, Ewloe and the Flintshire coast, and wants businesses in these areas to register their interest for a live demonstration.

WiMAX has been developed to provide high-quality, high capacity and cost-effective wireless IT communications. Many predict it will one day become the preferred technology over WiFi for wireless IT provision.

It is the first time such technology has been available commercially in North Wales.

One advantage is that users benefit from more reliable high bandwidth, whereas WiFi users typically have to share bandwidth. WiMAX also extends over much greater distances than WiFi.

It can link to existing “hardwired” networks, WiFi networks and hotspots, in addition to providing new, dedicated IT services for businesses. It can also be used as a safety net, should existing services fail.

It is a good example of a wireless technology that extends the reach of the FibreSpeed network with minimal disruption and without the high cost of cabled connections.

Carrier Wales Director John Prescott said: “WiMAX is a superb alternative to existing solutions. It gives you scalable bandwidth with reliability and reach into areas that have been unavailable until now, for significantly lower cost than incumbent technology.

“It’s cost effective and reliable, quick to provide and install, no long lead times and provides the answer for businesses requiring more high speed bandwidth or just wanting to ensure the resilience of their Internet connection.”

Some locations away from the network have already connected to FibreSpeed wirelessly. Student accommodation in Bangor uses licensed microwave technology directed through equipment installed at nearby Ysbyty Gwynedd.

FibreSpeed’s Sales Manager for North Wales, Richard Forde-Johnston, said service providers like Carrier Wales were ensuring businesses across the region could access FibreSpeed technology whether located near the network or not.

“FibreSpeed is a little over a year old but already the network’s reach has been extended well beyond the business parks with connection points,” he said.

“In 2010 we expect to see more and more organisations connect to FibreSpeed and discover how high-speed communications can transform business, thanks to cost-effective services provided through wireless technologies such as WiMAX.”

Carrier Wales will gauge demand for services in other areas of North Wales and will introduce the technology where demand dictates.

If you think you or your business could benefit from a WiMAX demonstration or workshop, contact FibreSpeed on 0844 225 2190.

NOTES TO EDITORS:

ABOUT WiMAX

WiMAX is a wireless digital communications system intended for wireless “metropolitan area networks.” It can provide broadband wireless access up to 30 miles for fixed stations, and 3 - 10 miles for mobile stations. In contrast, the WiFi local area network standard is limited in most cases to 100 to 300 feet.

With WiMAX, WiFi-like data rates are easily supported, but the issue of interference is lessened. WiMAX operates on both licensed and non-licensed frequencies, providing a regulated environment and viable economic model for wireless carriers.

ABOUT FIBRESPEED

FibreSpeed Ltd operates the open access network that is bringing affordable high-speed communications services to businesses across North Wales, through a network of over 320km of optical fibre cabling connecting Holyhead in Anglesey through the North Wales corridor down to Wrexham and up to the UK’s fibre backbone in Manchester.

The FibreSpeed project is a public-private initiative with funding from the Welsh Assembly Government, European Regional Development Funds and Geo Networks Ltd. The partners have committed £30 million of investment over 15 years.

FibreSpeed will stimulate economic growth and encourage enterprise in the region by giving North Wales’ businesses access to the UK’s most modern communications infrastructure. It will also create a vibrant new retail market for service providers, who will be able to sell affordable voice and data services in the region for the first time using FibreSpeed infrastructure.
